Intentions Are Giving Me Results–Not Goals

The word “intentions” has been following me. When that happens, I take note of it. I journal more and practice more awareness. And while I was applying intentions here and there, particularly to my goals, I didn’t have my ah ha! moment until last night.

In the Desire Map, Danielle LaPorte talks about setting intentions instead of goals. Goals are the end result, the outcome. Your goal may be to publish your book by August 30th. Your intention, on the other hand, focuses on the present moment.

“I’m writing this book to shed light on the reality of generational curses through the stories of five women.”

That’s a good starting point. It would even be a good idea to post this intention somewhere in your workspace. However, for the present moment, you need to be more specific. You just sat down at the computer and pulled up your manuscript. What is your intention right now?

“I’m giving Mona the choice to either accept something real or go back to that ninja who she knows ain’t no good for her.”

During research for a book that I’m writing on meditation, I discovered that a number of meditation instructors meditate before entering a teaching session. I do the same, for the purpose of cleansing myself from my “stuff” before talking to someone else about theirs. Digging deeper, I learned that their primary reason for doing so was to set an intention.

Intentions help us to gain confidence that what we’re doing is in alignment with our personal beliefs and desires.

Our intentions serve as a guide to living in the present, being our best selves, and living the life that we want (not the one we’ll settle for). Going back to my post on taking full responsibility for every moment, setting intentions reminds you of your control over your experiences. They gift you that clarity that we’re forever seeking.

Now I set intentions with just about everything, and especially with the important stuff like praying, meditating, writing, and teaching. I set my intention first then I go for it. Results? Instantaneous! Some subtle, others louder, but definitely noticeable. I’m about to make a business call. Prior to, I’m going to take a breather and set my intentions.

What are some of your goals and intentions?
