5 Things You Don’t Know About Me

I started giggling when thinking of the five things that I wanted to share with you for a number of reasons. For one, I wanted to risk a lil’ embarrassment in the process. To actually share something that I wouldn’t otherwise share. For two, I felt like I was in pajamas at a sleepover with a room full of homegirls about to tell a secret.

I wasn’t always the girl with a bunch of friends. I had a few homeboys and my journal, and that was that. Yeah, you need writing, but you also need women. Both are spaces in your spiritual journey to undress, profess, and confess (amen?)

One of my favorite girls and fellow #RadicalSelfie coach, Akilah, actually popped this 5 things UOENO about me off. I cracked up laughing while reading her list and decided to make my own. Here ’tis:

1. I’m just now reading I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.

Pick your chin up. I know. I’m late. But you don’t get to it until you get to it, right? Yeah, I had the opportunity back in school, but I didn’t like being told what to do and that includes what to read. Shrugs. I’m here now though, about a quarter of the way in.

2.  I still have writer’s doubt sometimes.

I used to feel inadequate to be a writing coach because of it, but now I see it as all the more reason to. If I can get over the fears of bad reviews and rejections, then I promise you that you can. Although I have to consciously remind myself of it, the truth is: Doubt is actually pretty damn good fuel to do a good job. The problem, most times, is not what you produce. It’s the procrastination. We put off what we dread, but if you commit to it anyway, then you’ll see that it’s actually pretty easy.

3. I’m known to leave when I ain’t feeling it. Quick.

Even in my churching days, if the pastor said something I didn’t like or was holding us for too long, I was out of there. Between the ages 14 and 19, I held at least 14 different jobs. Talk to me crazy and I was out of there–either on the spot or I disappeared after the break. Birthday dinners, dates, meeting mamas, family reunions, etc. And I like to dabble. I may visit a book club, like it, but never come back. Might participate in an ongoing girls’ night for three Sundays in a row, then stop coming. Ain’t nothing against them, it’s just me. I’m a Pisces; too much ocean out here.

4. I also considered being a stripper.

My friend came to see me in New Orleans and wanted to hit some strip clubs. I’m an open book and often assume that the rest of the world is too. I asked the dancer how much she makes and I don’t remember the exact figures, but a good night made my eyes pop and a slow night was about the same as my bi-weekly paycheck. I made an appointment to audition, but never showed up.

5. Me and my daughter twerk for fun (and exercise).

It’s judged on social media, I know. But in our house, it goes down. Music is playing most of the time anyway, and when that beat drop, sometimes you don’t have a choice. In the same way that Maya stopped talking, I stopped dancing for years. Trust me when I tell you, women need it. Sometimes we bounce (New Orleans style twerking), otherwise we belly dance, break dance (or at least pretend to), or whatever else our bodies feel like doing. #DivineFeminine #BlackCulture

What’s your five things? I dare you to blog it. If you don’t have a blog, then list it in the comments here. Yeah, I’m nosey like that.

Thank you for risking expression. I love all of these, but your #3 should’ve been my #1! I mean, I was so quick to be at a job, get talked to crossways, and be like, ‘I’m going to lunch early,’ and never stepping foot back in dat bytch, not neva.

Ok, I am cracking up at some of our similarities.just going off of your list alone..here is mines….#1…never read the book either and some other classic, not sure why…I did buy the Kindle version to IKWTCBS (too lazy to type it out) last year but have yet to read it…will one day #2 still do too #3 Back in my day from like 18-20, I would walk off of a job, quick than a mug sometimes for no reason, most times because the work was crap. I always found a new gig, sometimes the same day. But I would walk off right when I am needed, matter of fact at 3 jobs I worked with a friend and we walked off with each other all the time. But I do stick it out at family functions though, lol #4 Never considered being a stripper, not my thing plus my moves aren’t the greatest and I am skinny, so yeah…but I did consider being a waitress at a strip club when I moved out on my own…We have sooooo many in Detroit, I figure my cute face could be good enough to get hired and get tips but my attitude sucks, so I knew eventually it wouldn’t work, so I didn’t try. A few years ago, my S.O did bouncer/security at the strip club for awhile and after going to work with him a few times, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be but it wouldn’t have worked for me now or then. #5 I lost my dance moves for some reason, i wasn’t the best dancer but I did my thing but now, it has all gone away but yeah that don’t stop me from popping, or I guess twerking (I hate that word, lol) but for sure when I am trying to get my Ciara on (my dance idol) you can’t ell me nothing and I am beats, dancing in my sitting down. lol…But a bonus for me #6 When I was around 20, I was working 2 jobs and going to school. I permed my hair even though I was dead tired and fell asleep with the perm in my hair for over an hour, close to 2, I think. When I washed it out. My middle hair was about 3 inches long….I found a stylist and he cut my hair to a short cut that was like an inch, he gave me the really short pencil curls with itty bitty curlers. I was so self conscious, i thought I looked like a boy but as soon as I walked out on the street, i got complimented that whole day. I rocked that style for a bout a year and even cut my hair that length about 2xs after that.

Sharisa, I have tears in my eyes! So your #4 and your bonus as me over here dying, dead, back to life, and back to dying. That’s hilarious. How did that happen? You slept through the burning and everything? Damn! Glad it worked out for you though. You’re gonna have to email me a pic or #tbt that thang or something. Oh yeah, I also led a lil’ work revolution at a call center. Talked about five other girls to walk out with me. Good times (in retrospect).
